Wales Air Ambulance
Fundraising Evening
Angelina's Italian Restaurant, High Street, Abersoch: (17/11/2008) On Sunday 9th November, a charity dinner and
quiz was held at Angelina's Restaurant in Abersoch, with the aim
of raising £1000 (the cost of an average mission) for Wales
Air Ambulance.
Tickets were £25, and included a glass
of fizz on arrival, dinner and quiz entry. The evening comprised
of a four-course meal with quiz rounds taking place between courses:
guests were invited to form teams of 4-6 and answered questions
on subjects such as Food and Drink, Wales and Italy.
Runners Up: "The Should've Paid
More Attention At School Kids"
After six rounds of questions, and some (apparently
very difficult) Mr Men to identify, the quiz was won by 'The Blockheads'
(Jilly and Block, Mike and Sue Daley and Mike and Lynne Maylor)
who narrowly defeated 'The Should've Paid More Attention At School
Kids' (Ben and Jules Holland, Josh and Jamie Brabbin, Ed Haywood
and Hannah Daley) after a tiebreak question.
At the end of the evening a raffle was held,
with a range of prizes donated by Angelina's suppliers and generous
locals. Angelina's regulars Steve and Jenny Harris also donated
a weeks' holiday in their Spanish villa, which was auctioned off,
selling for £701.
The evening raised a total of £1,750
for Wales Air Ambulance, significantly more than the original
target of £1000. The organisers are very grateful to everyone
involved in this event and pleased to have been able to raise
this much money for such a worthy cause.

Abersoch RNLI New Year's Dip: (16/11/2008)

not give the New Year a joyful welcome by coming to Abersoch to

New Year's Eve, you can wash away 2008 and clear your heads with
a stimulating dip in the sea on New Year's Day! The annual sponsored
Fancy Dress Sea Dip will take place at 12 noon on Main Beach;
last year 200 brave souls "dipped" in aid of the Abersoch
Lifeboat. This year the word is that one sponsor is attempting
to raise £1000, incredible! Even if you chicken out of going
in the sea, come along and watch, it is great fun. Click

fruit. The banana tree has now reached 15ft high with 6 to 8 ft
long leaves and after flowering in the summer, a few tiny bananas
have been produced, as the photo below shows. The bananas are
not edible as they are, but hopes are high that a better summer

Coastguards
& Lifeboat In Cliff Rescue: (24/09/2008) A man was rescued on Tuesday evening after becoming trapped
on cliffs between Porth Ceiriad and Cilan Head. The combined efforts
of the local shore based Coastguard Rescue Team and the Abersoch
RNLI Inshore Lifeboat carried out the rescue. According to the
www.rnliabersoch.co.uk
website, "The man had been trying
to go fishing with his brother but had taken the wrong route down
the cliff and got himself into a position where he could neither
go back up or get down. The Lifeboat landed a crewman at the bottom
of the cliffs as a marker for the Coastguard Cliff Rescue Team
who sent a man to the casualty by abseiling down the cliffs. He
reached the casualty and brought him down on the ropes to the
cliff base where both were picked up by the Lifeboat."

Charity Lecture:
(29/08/2008) Soroptimist International of South Caernarfonshire are
delighted that Mark Cook OBE the founder president of Hope
and Homes for Children has agreed to give a Charity Lecture on
Thursday 4th September 2008 at 7.00pm at the Canolfan, Porthmadog.
Tickets are £10.00, which includes Cheese and Wine and can
be obtained from either Jane at 01758 712794 or Louise at 01758712028. Mark Cook was a UN Commander in the former Yugoslavia in
1993 and close to retirement when he made a plea on television
for money to restore and rebuild orphanages. A a result of this,
the charity Hope and Homes for Children was started and now helps
over 2000 children in 13 countries. At the present time funds
are being raised for "Project Sierra" to help the children
in Sierra Leone which is one of the poorest countries in the world.

Lifeboat / Air
Ambulance Rescue: (23/08/2008) Abersoch Lifeboat brought an injured woman ashore on Friday
to a waiting Air Ambulance (see photo below). The Air Ambulance
pilot showed great skill in landing the helicopter on a very narrow
strip of land above the high tide mark on the Harbour Beach. For
details of the incident, visit: www.rnliabersoch.co.uk/callout_files.htm
Coastguard Strike:
(23/08/2008) Holyhead Coastguard will be starting a 48 hour strike on
Saturday evening which could have implications for the co-ordination
of the maritime rescue services over the weekend (Holyhead Coastguard
co-ordinates all rescues in our area). The RNLI Lifeboats are
a separate, voluntary service and will be operating as normal,
as will the local auxillary Coastguard teams, however the public
should be aware that there could be shortcomings in the speed
and efficiency of rescue this weekend.
Another Porth
Neigwl Incident: (21/08/2008) The emergency services were called again on Wednesday evening
(the third time in a week) when persons got into difficulty again
in gentle surf conditions at Porth Neigwl. Fortunately, 2 surf
instructors, who are trained surf lifeguards, were teaching a
group nearby at the time and pulled the people out of the sea.
A total of 5 people were rescued from the water, including 2 persons
who had initially gone into help.
Porth Neigwl
Incidents: (20/08/2008) The last week has seen 2 incidents involving the emergency
services at Porth Neigwl where people have got into difficulty
after getting caught in rip currents. One of the incidents was
a near-drowning and the person involved was airlifted to hospital.
We posted some information on "rips" some time ago -
and it can be viewed by clicking here.
If you are considering going into the water at this beach, then
a knowledge of rip currents is essential, especially as there
are no surf lifeguards at any beach in Gwynedd.
Wakestock 2009
Dates Announced: (20/08/2008) After the success of Relentless Wakestock 2008, many fans
are clamouring to find out the dates for Wakestock 2009. After
much anticipation organisers are pleased to announce that, subject
to final confirmation, Wakestock 2009 will take place on the 10th,
11th and 12th July next year. The event will remain a three-night
extravaganza, after such great feedback from this year. These
dates ensure that the event once again takes place outside of
the busiest summer season when the children are off school. Keep
an eye on www.wakestock.co.uk
for the latest news on next years event.
Storm Surge
Causes Damage on Abersoch Main Beach: (19/08/2008) A large spring tide combined with strong winds and a storm
surge affected between 30 and 50 dinghies on Abersoch Main Beach
overnight with up to a dozen sustaning some serious damage. Coastguards
were called to the beach last night due to safety fears of persons
entering the water to try and rescue the craft. The worst of the
damage was caused near to the Golf Road slipway and the scene
this morning, was a rather sad one. The height of the tide appears
to have caught many by suprise and it appears that the evening
high tide coincided with the arrival of a large Atlantic swell,
making the tide surge much higher than normal. Some photos of
the beach can be viewed at John Wormalds website at: http://john53.zenfolio.com/p598925468/
Noson Lawen
At Oriel Plas: (17/08/2008) There will be a Welsh Folk Evening (Noson Lawen) at Oriel

the gallery and have a burger or hot dog, which is included in
the ticket price. The bbq will also be available during the half-time
break. The concert will begin at 7.15 pm, and this week will feature
the popular Welsh group Brigyn , a group of harpists
Derw Bach and storytelling by Dafydd Davies
Hughes. For more info and contact info: www.oriel.org.uk

Abersoch Regatta
Raft Race: (15/08/2008) This years raft race saw a good
crowd watch fleets of highly tuned, junior and senior rafts racing
on Abersoch Main Beach. The juniors raced from the SCYC end to
the Golf Slipway and was won by the "Rookies", closely
followed by "Pipedream" and "Razor". The seniors
then raced round to the harbour and comfortable winners (again!)
were Marcus and Jack on "Overboard". There was a very
close finish for second place with "Board Shorts" pipping
soloist Andy Hughes with "Team Jones" close behind in
fourth. There was certainly a higher standard of raft this year
and the Abersoch Regatta Committee would like to thank all those
who took part in the race and the sponsors, the Vaynol Arms. John
Wormald of Totally Abersoch was there to film the event and you

UFO's Filmed
Over Abersoch - Explanation?: (08/08/2008) Regarding the story below- we
have been emailed by an aviation expert who says: "Its
very likely to be a flare from an Iridium satellite as it passes
over us (usually visible for about 10 minutes). The satellite
has huge reflectors and they reflect the sunlight, even when its
dark on the ground.
It doesn't appear to be moving that quick and almost looks stationary
at
times. As it moves across the sky the sunlight at some point becomes
focused
on the viewer on the ground and this gives the almost incandescent
appearance for a second or two and then it seems to disappear
but all that's
happened is the light is no longer being reflected."
Mindless Vandalism
Putting Lives At Risk: (07/08/2008) A recent spate of thefts and
vandalism at our local beaches is potentially putting lives at
risk. 2 safety signs near to the entrance of Porth Neigwl have
recently been stolen and the life belt post knocked down. Another
life belt was stolen from Abersoch Main Beach this week. A local
resident summed up the actions by saying "It takes a really
special kind of idiot to steal or vandalise equipment that is
designed to save lives."

White Stuff Sandblast 2008:(05/08/08) White Stuff, the fashion
lifestyle retailer is kicking off another summer beach football
event to raise money for local charities. The tournament
will be on Wednesday 27th August at Main Beach, Abersoch and ends
with a 'White Stuff Sunset Sessions' party at The Vaynol, with
live acoustic music from some of Abersoch's local talent. Proceeds
from the day will go to Wales Ambulance Service, a charity providing
a vital service through emergency air cover for those who face
life-threatening illness or injuries.
Phae Wood, Abersoch's Store Manager can't
wait for kick-off, "It's a great day out for some great causes.
It's the perfect way to get active, meet fellow fans of the beautiful
game and it's all on the beach! Plus our White Stuff Sunset Sessions
are fast becoming legendary. All people need to do is pop into
their local store and sign up. And we haven't forgotten about
the girls either! We'd love more girls to sign up and get tackling,
although we've also got a 'WAG' enclosure for the next Colleen
Rooney. Here you'll be able to get some preening and pampering
done while the boys play out on the pitch."
White Stuff is inviting anyone over
16 to take part in 5-a-side football matches right on the beach.
Teams can sign up at the White Stuff store in Abersoch at a cost
of £30 per team, with all proceeds going to charity. Places
are limited, so anyone interested should sign up now to avoid
disappointment.

GP14 World Championship - Latest News:(12/07/08) Entries for the GP14 World Championship
2008 to be held in Abersoch,
North Wales have now hit 110. Amongst the latest to enter are
former
Endeavour Trophy Champion of Champions, and one of the most successful
GP14 pairings of all time, Richard Estaugh and Simon Potts, alongside
the well known and also very successful dinghy sailor (himself
a former
Champion of Champions) Jim Hunt, crewed by Andy Service.
Richards record in the GP14 is impressive.
He has won no less than 6
World, 12 National and 11 Inland Championships! Back together
with Simon
for the first time since their 2007 Nationals win, this team will
no
doubt be pushing for another podium finish. However, it will not
be an
easy challenge.
This event will also see current GP14 World
Champions Ian Dobson and
Andy Tunnicliffe seek to defend their title, 2003 World Champions
Neil
Marsden and Derek Hill team up again to repeat the success they
enjoyed
in Abersoch that year and current Fireball World Champion Matt
Mee
looking to add another World Championship to his growing list
of
honours, which already include a GP14 National Championship. There
are
many others too, including Carl Jeffs and Jim Toothill who will
again be
hoping to capture the major title that still alludes them.
Elsewhere, there will be the inevitable fight
for silver and bronze
fleet prizes and special trophies, which feature as much in the
post-race bar talk as any other. And as if this high level of
competition throughout the fleet and the prospect of racing against
109
other boats was not enough to entice people, Championship Chairman
Ian
Sinclair and his team, together with South Caernarvonshire Yacht
Club
are working tirelessly to ensure a great time off the water as
well,
with live bands, hog roasts and much more!
You can find out more on the GP14 Worlds
web page - www.gp14.org.

The Relentless Wakestock 2008 ended last night after 3 days of

Abersoch Main Beach - Sand Report:
(19/06/08) The strong SW winds over the last couple of days have been
welcome in one respect, they have started to build up the sand
back on the Main Beach. The photos below show the large rock near
to the SCYC end of the beach has now been nearly covered again.
Towards the Golf Slip there is still quite a few pebbles and between
the Golf Slip and the groynes, there is a good cover of pebbles,
but these areas should quickly improve if we continue to get winds
from the prevailing direction (SW to W).

large crowds watched the jazz street parade that went around the

Surf Lifesaving Demo At Porth Neigwl:
(14/06/08) As part of Keep Wales Tidy's mission
to create a Clean, Safe and Tidy Wales the Surf Life Saving Association
of Wales (www.slsawales.org)
came to Hell's Mouth (Porth Neigwl) on Saturday 7th June to hold
a surf life saving day.
Abersoch lifeboat also kindly lent their
support to the day and demonstrated the link between surf life
saving and offshore rescue.
The Surf life saving association showed various rescuing techniques
throughout the day to Keep Wales tidy Volunteers and interested
locals alike.
The hope is to establish a surf life saving club for pen llyn
as most beaches in South Wales have established clubs but as yet
there are no clubs in North Wales. If you are interested our would like
to know more please contact Lee Oliver on 07824504799.
Lucky Escape For Trio: (13/06/08) Abersoch Lifeboat's very busy year continues with yet another
service this afternoon. Holyhead
Coastguard received reports of 3 people and an inflatable on Ynys
Gwylan (Gull Island) SE of Aberdaron. The inflatable was the "toy"
type with "toy" oars and it would appear that due to
the wind direction and strong currents in the area, the trio had
virtually no chance of getting back to Aberdaron. The trio at
first refused to be taken to safety and appeared to have no idea
of the danger they were putting themselves in. They had no lifejackets
and no warm clothing. Eventually they were persuaded as to their
predicament and were returned to the beach at Aberdaron. Potentially,
this was 3 lives saved. www.rnliabersoch.co.uk

Life Saved Off Porth Ceiriad: (11/06/08) Abersoch's RNLI Atlantic 75 Lifeboat, "Margaret Bench
Of Solihull" was involved in a dramatic rescue off Porth
Ceiriad yesterday afternoon after 2 people found themselves in
the water after coming off a jet ski. A local fishing boat with
one person on board spotted someone waving for help in the water.
The fisherman raised the alarm with Holyhead Coastguard and assisted
the 2 people (a young man and young woman). The young man was
not able to properly assist himself due to shock and was attached
to the boat with a rope under his arms and the fisherman and the
young woman kept his head above water. The actions of the fisherman
and the young woman before the Lifeboat arrived, appear to have
saved the life of the young man. The Lifeboat administered first
aid to the young man and took both casualties back to a waiting
ambulance at Abersoch Lifeboat Station. www.rnliabersoch.co.uk

GP14 World Championship Entries Go Ton
Up: (05/06/08) 100 boats and counting have entered
the 2008 GP14 World Championship, probably making this the season's
largest two man dinghy event in the UK open to sailors of all
ages. And what an event we expect it to be The
two hundred plus competitors, their families and friends will
descend on Abersoch, North Wales for the week long regatta hosted
by South Caernarvonshire Yacht Club between 2 - 8 August. They
will be greeted by glorious sands, one of the best sailing areas
in the UK and with any luck fair winds.
Preparations are
well in hand for a great week of sailing and socialising. There
will be big fleet racing all week and plenty to keep people well
fed, watered and entertained back on shore, including live bands,
a hog roast, fun and games and some fantastic prizes to be won
in the daily prize draw.
On the water the
competition will be hot, with some of the finest dinghy sailors
in the UK pitting their wits against each other. Current
Fireball World Champion and former GP14 National and Youth Champion
Matt Mee (he's only 21!) sailing with Mark Hogan, will take on
current GP14 World Champions Ian Dobson and Andy Tunnicliffe (also
only 21!) and dinghy sailing stalwart and former GP14 World Champion
Neil Marsden reunited with long-time GP14 crew Derek Hill. Add
in the usual mix of current top GP14 sailing talent and the challenge
for the top spot will be a closely fought affair.
As always the fleet
will offer great racing whatever your level of ability and prizes
will be on offer for silver and bronze fleet sailors, as well
as the usual array of special prizes. We are also pleased to announce
that in addition to competing, Neil Marsden, one of the RYA's
leading sailing coaches, will be giving a talk on gate starts
on the first weekend. There can be few better to get some top
tips from before starting your week of racing.
If all this sounds tempting it is still
not too late to enter. Entries remain open until 14 July. Visit
www.gp14.org for more information.
Whales!:
(05/06/08) The photo below was taken during a cruise from Abersoch
to Malahide over the
weekend of 30th May/1st June on the boat 'Emma Rayner'. The boat
owner, Ed Dawes, takes up the story: "In almost flat calm
conditions we saw whales both on the way over and on the way back,
in each case about 10 miles off the coast of Ireland in about
30m of water. On the way back, on Sunday morning, we encountered
around half a dozen whales - so cut the engines and drifted. We
were then treated to an amazing wildlife spectacle for around
half an hour as they swam and fed, undisturbed, around us."

Protection Of Dolphins & Seals:
(03/06/08) Already this year there have been several reports of powerboats
and jet skis "harrassing" the Bottlenose Dolphins that
are resident in the waters near Abersoch. It is appreciated that
more often than not this is not deliberate and due to water users
not knowing the correct procedures. We have been asked to point
out that this "harrassment" is a criminal offence as
the waters in Cardigan Bay are a Special Area of Conservation
(SAC). Deliberate or reckless disturbance of any protected species
such as dolphins is an offence under the Wildlife and Countryside
Act 1981 and the Countryside Rights Of Way Act 2000.
When encountering dolphins at sea it is understandable
that the initial reaction is to drive over to get a closer look,
however, this is not in the dolphins interests.
The SAC guidelines suggest the following:
If Dolphins, Seals or Porpoises are encountered
at sea, please:
- Do not steer directly towards them or appraoch
within 100m.
- If you are lucky enough to have dolphins come alongside your
boat - keep a steady course and speed up or slow down gradually
as erratic manoeuvring and starting and stopping the engine will
disturb the animals.
- Do not try and swim with them. Its dangerous for you and potentially
stressful for the dolphins. Swimming with them is classed as harrassment
and is also a criminal offence.
- Do not try and feed them or make excessive noise.
- Take extra care to avoid disturbing dolphins and porpoises with
their young.
- Do not interfere with seals resting on the shore, especially
when with their young during the breeding season from August to
October.
- Do not discard litter and fishing tackle at sea.
Abersoch Lifeboat
Open Day Success: (03/06/2008) Abersoch RNLI's Annual Open Day held on Friday,
May 30 was a huge success
with £1600 being raised towards the running of its Lifeboat
service.
Hundreds of people came along to support the event.
As the sun shone, the crowds browsed among
the various stalls, boarded the
Lifeboat, met the volunteers and generally enjoyed a great day
out.
Unfortunately, due to circumstances beyond
the organizers' control, the RAF
rescue helicopter and the famous Red Arrows were unable to attend.
The tireless support of the members of the
fund raising committee is greatly
appreciated by all, and they in turn would like to thank everybody
who
contributed in any way to the success of the day. A special thanks

Ryder Cup Visits
Abersoch : (31/05/2008) The Ryder Cup visited Clwb Golff Abersoch in
grand style on Friday as part
of the whirlwind tour. www.pgarydercuptour.co.uk of Wales arranged

the charity Tenovus www.tenovus.com and was welcomed by many members
of the club and the Captain Robert Parry and Lady Captain Joan
Royle. The Ryder Cup, which is Golf's most prestigious team event,
will be fought between GB & Europe against the USA at Celtic
Manor in 2010. The members of Abersoch, especially the younger
members, were delighted to actually see the Cup and give
generously to the Tenovus charity, which they will continue support
in the
run up to 2010. The visit was especially opportune as Abersoch
is celebrating 100 years of golf with the Club's Centenary this
year, after being founded by local residents early last century.
The course features 18 holes, combining unique links golf and
a few parkland holes. It is a very friendly club that welcomes

An Easterly Weekend - Revisited!:
(27/05/2008) After some pleasant sunshine on Saturday, Sunday
saw a wet afternoon and Monday was cloudy and chilly. There was
also a fresh to strong E or NE wind blowing all weekend which
made the bay off Abersoch very rough at times and unsuitable for
most boating activities. The onshore wind has meant that there
has been a temporary scouring of the sand off parts of Abersoch
Main Beach, especially between the Golf slipway and the groynes.
There is nothing particularly unusual in this and when the prevailing
west or southwesterly winds return, the sand will build up again
quite quickly.

Lifeboat: (09/05/2008)
The Abersoch RNLI Lifeboat and its volunteer crew has already
seen 9 services so far in 2008, which is a busier than usual start
to the season. This comes after the record 40 services that were
carried out in 2007. 4 of the services in 2008 have been to persons
cut off by the tide, which station officials have described as
a "worrying trend". The Caernarvon & Denbigh Herald
ran a story on this yesterday and the article can be viewed here.
You can keep up to date with the latest launches at www.rnliabersoch.co.uk.
Pizza Place Re-Opens: (07/05/2008) Lynne and Mike open the doors to The Pizza Place
at the Egryn from Friday 9th May at 5pm. Once again they'll be
offering a fantastic range of freshly made pizzas, including some
new ones to tempt you - check out the Apollo which is rocket powered!
They will also be offering a range of exotic gourmet burgers (the
Thai burger with Thai red curry sauce and grilled pineapple sounds
fantastic) along with steaks, fish and salads. They are fully
licensed, open to non-residents and welcome children. Please telephone
01758 712332 to reserve a table.
Abersoch Powerboat Club Fundraiser:

last Friday in aid of the
Air Ambulance. Over 100 people attended and enjoyed a complimentary
chilli
supper provided by owners of the PB, Brian and Sandra Mosley.
Ian Burnett
whipped the crowd into a frenzy and auctioned several items generously
donated by local business people and regulars of the PB. Tim,
from Abersoch
Boatyard, donated a Kayak and local artist Neil Hopkins donated
a signed
print. Lee, owner of LS Carpets in Pwllheli, kindly contributed
four great
prizes and Totally Abersoch Studio and Gallery provided two framed
prints
which were individually auctioned and contributed a further £630
to the
grand total for the evening which was an amazing £1,640.
RNLI Shop Re-Opens: (03/05/2008) The shop at the RNLI Abersoch Lifeboat Station

Happy Mondays, Zane Lowe & Jo Whiley
at Wakestock: (25/04/2008) The latest confirmed additions to what is now
a phenomenal line-up for Wakestock this year includes indie legends
Happy Mondays and Radio 1 legends Jo Whiley & Zane Lowe.
Radio 1's leading lady JO WHILEY will be
making the trip to sunny Wales to host the main stage. JO WHILEY
has been a member of the Radio 1 team for 15 years and has built
up a reputation for championing some of the hottest acts of the
British music scene today, through her flagship afternoon show
on Radio 1. Her legendary Live Lounge sessions have become hugely
popular with listeners and artists alike and we are sure that
she will go down well with the Wakestock crowds, who will appreciate
that she is one of the most influential Djs around today.
She will be joined by her Radio 1 colleague
and one of the hottest DJ's around, ZANE LOWE, who will be coming
along with some very special guests to host his own tent. This
man has been fundamental in finding and nurturing some of the
finest acts of the British music scene today, through his flagship
evening show on Radio 1. He is also something of an MTV veteran
having appeared on the station since 1997. His most current show
Gonzo on MTV Two introduces some of most exciting new acts around,
some of whom will be appearing on stage with him this year.
Wakestock 2008 also sees the HAPPY MONDAYS,
who rose to fame in the 80's within the Manchester rave scene,
make the trip to Abersoch. They have reformed and are back and
receiving critical acclaim with their album Uncle Dysfunktion.
These legendary party animals will definitely get the crowds going!
These exciting announcements are just in
time for tickets going on sale in the shops on Wednesday next
week (30th April). This is a month earlier than usual due to the
strong line-up & after selling out weeks in advance last year.
Don't miss out and get them from any of the following shops: OSD,

An Easterly Weekend: (21/04/2008) The last few days has seen a persistent ENE
wind blowing into the bay. This wind direction tends to be a nuisance
all year round due to the short frequency swell it whips up, making
it very rough in the bay and also its a cold wind for much of
the year. The wind was particularly strong overnight into Saturday
and resulted in a large boat being sunk in the moorings.
Early Saturday Morning
The onshore winds have also
caused a large amount of sand to be scoured from the Main Beach,
but this normally quickly returns after a spell of the prevailing
SW winds. This week we should see temperatures rise and hopefully
today will be the last day of easterlies for a while.
